Quick Notes to SCEA Site Representatives

December 4, 2008

Officer/Director Elections

Staff informed the Site Reps (SR) that there were no nominations for the President position and that there were also no nominations for the Director positions in the Departments. Therefore, Gary Bengs will continue as President of SCEA for another two year term.  Staff noted that were four vacancies on the Board for the Director positions representing the Animal Control, Community Services, Library and Public Works Departments.

Bulletin Boards

Staff asked if the Site Representatives knew where their Union bulletin boards were located.  Staff encouraged seeking approval for a larger board if they currently had a smaller board. Staff is working on new ideas for decorating and filling the boards with updated information regularly. Materials will be distributed at the meetings so the leadership can take the material back to the workplace and decorate their boards quarterly or replace old items with new information. Discussion occurred regarding appropriate material for the bulletin boards.

Member Appreciation Days

Staff is planning Member Appreciation Days during 2009 rather than a membership picnic. The theme will be St. Patrick’s Day and held in March. Staff is asking our leadership for input and we are hoping to get volunteers to help with the events. Staff also hopes to hold some Ice Cream Days and maybe some morning donuts events if time allows.

Workplace Discussion

Staff is asking the Site Representatives to bring concerns from their workplaces to the meetings on a rotating basis with the intent of different departments gaining awareness and may even gain some appreciation for their workplaces after hearing about other office problems or management practices. Staff would allocate some time on the Agenda for these reports.

Sutter County Budget

Discussion occurred regarding the status of the County’s budget and concern was expressed about the impact of salary increases negotiated in the contract.  Staff reported that the County remains in a good position, based upon the reserves accumulated in years past.  Problems could develop in future years if the State budget problem is not resolved and they keep taking funds from local government.
